The Best Lego Designs

Legos are toys, but they can also inspire amazing designs. LEGO artists use the small plastic bricks to build everything from robots to architecture. Engineers from the company also create new components that let builders to construct more complicated models. Erik Varszegi, a Master Builder with the Lego Group in Billund, Denmark created a new element this year called the curve of the slope. It allows Lego users to create more slanted designs while adhering the strict color palette of the company. The slopes can be used to create more dynamic shapes, such as a curving staircase.

While some Lego designs are the work of professional designers, other designs are the result of the wildly popular Lego Ideas set-design program. The Ideas line lets anyone design a set, and it’s also possible to produce. It gives fame and 1percent of sales to anyone who convinces 10,000 peers that their work is worthy of being be produced. It’s no surprise that most elaborate and impressive sets typically garner the most support — especially when they include iconic scenes or characters from movies, TV shows or from the real world.

One of the most impressive Lego designs are two iconic space-themed models including the NASA spaceship Discovery and a model of the Hubble Telescope. Each model comes with display plaques and a small Lego model of the scientist that designed the telescope. Other impressive models include an framed rainbow, a steampunk dragon and a model of the Palace of Westminster.
